Worthy Brother Knights:
As usual, our Council had another busy month. I appreciate everyone's time and support for our Council's activities. On Sunday morning, April 23, the local Blood bank conducted a blood drive at Santa Sophia Church from 8:00 to 1:00 p.m. Our Brothers assisted in this event by giving blood and by providing breakfast to those who gave blood. Victor Lopez and Jack Crutchfield were in charge of cooking the breakfast with serving help from Bobbie Schaefer and Greg Villard. Our Council will be co-sponsoring a Family Game Day, May 21st, after the 11:00AM Mass with the Santa Sophia Youth Group. Br. Daniel Cummings is the Youth Group leader and will be chairing this event. Our role in this activity is to participate in the games and provide pizza and soft drinks for all attendees. More details about this event as they become available. The Knights of Columbus will be holding its annual state convention in San Diego at the Town and Country Motel in Mission Valley from May 18-21. Shawn Reidy and I will be attending the convention as delegates representing our Council. All Brothers and spouses in our Council are invited to attend, especially the fun -filled social hours in the hospitality suite with complimentary food and drinks. Also, this Friday Night, our Council will be hosting another Catholic movie night for the Parish in the DeMoor room at 7:00 p.m. Tomorrow night's movie is "For Greater Glory, "which depicts the Mexican people's struggle to save their Catholic faith against an atheist government in the 1920's. With Ed Reidy chairing this event, our Council will provide popcorn and refreshments to all who attend. So far this year, we have recruited seven new members to our Council. We need to recruit just two new members by June 30th to attain Star Council status, which is the goal of every Knights of Columbus Council. Our Council is planning another membership drive the June 3-4 weekend to reach this goal. Please let me know if any Brothers will be available to assist in signing up new members after the weekend Masses. If any Brothers have any Catholic friends or relatives who might be interested in joining our Council, please contact me. Remember, every Brother is a recruiter. On May 15, our Council hosted a thank you party for the Santa Sophia Parish altar servers. We served pizza, ice cream, and cookies to approximately 60 altar servers and adults. Thanks go to Shawn Reidy, John Martin, Leo McGarry, and Greg Villard for helping on this event. On Saturday night, June 17th, we will be hosting our annual craft beer tasting accompanied by a family BBQ. More details about this event can be obtained from our website or the Church bulletin as they become available. We received 17 applications for our annual $1000 scholarship for eighth graders attending Catholic High Schools next year. These applications were judged by Randy Klotz (scholarship committee chair person), Nick Klotz, Leo McGarry, Ed Reidy, Ed Dondero, Pat Esquibel, and Greg Villard. The winner of the $1000 scholarship will be announced at the eighth-grade awards ceremony on May 30th. We now need to address who will be officers for our Council for the next Columbian year. Our bylaws require that we vote officers at our general business meeting in May. We have discussed the various positions with many Brothers and have come up with the following proposed slate of officers representing Brothers who have graciously come forward to lead our Council for next year: Grand Knight- Shawn Reidy Deputy Grand Knight - Leo McGarry Treasurer - Ed Reidy Chancellor - Dennis Bauer Recorder- Ernie McAbee Outside Guard - Jerry Mendoza Inside Guard - Daniel Cummings Lecturer - Sam Caeti Warden - Bobby Schaefer Financial Secretary - Gary Glen (non-voting position) Advocate - Jay Nicholson (non-voting position) 3 year Trustee - Greg Villard (non-voting position) 2 year Trustee- Pat Esquibel (non-voting position) 1 year Trustee- Jack Crutchfield (non-voting position) Webmaster- Shawn Reidy (non-voting position) We will be voting on the above slate at tonight's meeting. If any Brothers are still interested in running for an officer's position for next year, please contact me ASAP. Also, any Brother can be nominated for a voting position from the floor at tonight's meeting. Our officer's installation luncheon will held on Sunday, May 25th in the DeMoor room from 1-3 p.m. All Knights, spouses, families, and friends are invited to attend. As always, please remember to wear your Knights of Columbus "name plate" to mass. Do you know a Catholic Gentleman that is 18 years or older? Enrich his life and give him a membership in the Knights. Let's continue to work together in the spirit of Fr. Michael J. McGivney with Charity, Fraternity and Unity. If you have not been to a meeting in a while, plan on attending this Thursday and reacquaint yourself with your brothers, and what is currently being planned in your council. I hope to see you next month! Vivat Jesus! Greg Villard | Grand Knight | Valle De Oro |Council 9332 |
