Worthy Brother Knights:
It's been another busy month for our Council. I appreciate everyone's continued support for all our Council's activities. Our Council kicked off its Knights on Hikes program with an easy 6 mile hike around Lake Murray on September 17th. There were 8 participants - 4 Knights, 1 spouse, and 3 dogs.[Greg Villard, Leo McGarry and his dog, Maxine, Mike Butera, Bill Kelly and his wife Rebecca and their 2 dogs] Our next hike is scheduled for the Sweetwater River in Rancho San Diego sometime in November. On September 22nd, ten Knights and spouses from our Council attended a Light and Life surf and turf dinner at Home Ave., to support the Knights of Columbus pro-life program. On Saturday, September 24th, our Council traveled to Tecate to provide lunch for the boys, sisters, and workers at the orphanage. Thanks to Ed Reidy, Shawn Reidy, Eddie Padillo, Jack Crutchfield, and Jim and Rose Maasch who helped in this worthwhile case. Our next trip to the orphanage in Tecate is on November 5th. If you are interested in participating in or donating to this outing, please contact Ed Reidy, Tecate Outreach chairperson at ereidy@aol.com On Saturday evening, October 1, we hosted our 7th annual Wine tasting event. The approximately 140 attendees enjoyed great wine, food, and conversation that evening. Our net profit from this event was $3,455. Thank you goes to all our Brothers, spouses, and families who assisted in selling tickets, pouring wine, and setting and cleaning up the Hall for the event. Congratulations to Brother Dr. Michael Butera, MD, who attained his Third Degree (Knighthood) on October 8th. Thank you to Pat Esquibel and Ed Dondero for coordinating his Knighthood exemplification ceremony. Any first or second degree Knights wishing to advance to the next higher degree should contact PGK Pat Esquibel or PGK Ed Dondero. October is national Knights of Columbus membership drive month. Our Council will be holding our own membership drive on the weekend of October 29-30. In addition, we will be co-hosting a membership drive reception with the Catholic Daughters of America in the DeMoor room after the 11 a.m. Mass on October 30th. All Knights and their spouses are encouraged to attend and bring prospective Knights or Catholic Daughter candidates. Our Council will again be participating in the annual Columbian Foundation drive [ID Fund Drive aka "tootsie roll" drive] to support people with intellectual disabilities. All Knights are encouraged to help pass out tootsie rolls and collect money to the Columbian foundation which in turn donates the funds we collect to Noah Homes. This year's ID drive is chaired by Deputy Grand Knight Shawn Reidy and is scheduled for November 11-13. Also, Brother Ed Reidy has donated two San Diego Charger football tickets (50 yard line - field level) to a football raffle for the game against the Tennessee Titans. Raffle tickets are available for $10 and can be purchased after weekend Masses, at tonight's business meeting, or from Ed or Shawn Reidy. Proceeds from the raffle go to the Columbian Foundation and Noah Homes. Thank you to Jack Crutchfield, Shawn Reidy, and Andre Cleveland who coordinated the Soccer Challenge for the Santa Sophia Academy. Our winners from the Academy will move on to compete in the next level of competition. Our Council is now participating in the American Wheelchair Mission in part of a national Knights of Columbus campaign. The Mission collects money to purchase wheel chairs for distribution to disabled members of various organizations. This year's recipients were veterans. Last Saturday, Jerry Kay, Andre Cleveland, and Greg Villard participated in the veterans' wheelchair distribution at Father Joe's Village Warehouse. Jerry and Andre were also in charge of preparing lunch for all participants. Father Devdas has asked our Council to host a monthly religious movie night for the Parish. The first movie night is scheduled for Friday, November 18th at 7pm. The Knights will provide drinks and popcorn for the event. Ed and Shawn Reidy will be in charge of the movie nights. Sunday, October 30th is the Fifth Sunday of the month. Therefore, the Knights will be leading the saying of the Rosary immediately following the 8 am mass. All Knights and their spouses and families are encouraged to attend this Mass and participate in the Rosary. As always, please remember to wear your Knights of Columbus "name plate" to mass. Do you know a Catholic Gentleman that is 18 years or older? Enrich his life and give him a membership in the Knights. Every Knight is a recruiter. Let's all continue to work together in the spirit of Fr. Michael J. McGivney with Charity,Unity, and Fraternity! If you have not been to a meeting in a while, plan on attending this Thursday and reacquaint yourself with your brothers, and what is currently being planned in your council. I hope to see you next month! Have a safe and Happy Halloween! Vivat Jesus! Greg Villard | Grand Knight | Valle De Oro | Council 9332 |
