Worthy Brothers All,

By our standards, Jesus did things all wrong when He called His Disciples. He didn’t chose the “Best and the Brightest”, in fact He summoned very ordinary men working in the community, without regard to origin, social status, or past life. His Disciples were not the most powerful, most educated, or wealthiest of those times. However those twelve ordinary men, through the example and teachings of Jesus, changed the world. When God looks at people, he sees not only what we are, but also what we can become. Make a difference, be an active Knight.

Congratulations to Sarah and Ryan Melcher on winning the State soccer shoot out championship in their respective divisions. Their trophies are on the way. Way to go, you made our SSA community proud.

Last month our Council was awarded the first “Be the Difference Award” from our Chapter. The award is for outstanding service to our church, order, and community. It was tremendous and humbling to have our Council’s many talented and dedicated Knights recognized by our Brother Knights at Chapter.

On Jan 23 Brother Pat Esquibel and I had the privilege of presenting a check to Noah Homes in the amount of $2912.12. The proceeds from our Council Intellectual Disabilities Drive last October. Noah Ark Angels Foundation matched those funds resulting in a $5824.24 contribution to an outstanding cause. Many thanks to our ID Fund director, Brother Pat Esquibel.

On Jan 30, Brothers Greg Villard and Leo McGarry presented three cash awards of $100, $75, and$50 to the top 8th grade essay contest winners at Santa Sophia Academy.  The top essay was forwarded to our Chapter to compete at the next level.

Saturday Jan.31 Worthy PGK Ed Dondero along with many Brother Knights participated in the San Diego walk for Life in Balboa Park.

Brother Dennis Bauer has been an outstanding youth director for the Council and SSA.  He qualified 12 of our Academy students to compete at the Chapter Basketball Free throw contest on Feb 14 at Saints High School. Of those we know Damien Bloemandaal placed first in the boys age 14 division. We hope to get more information soon. The State Championship will be March 21 in Fresno.

Saturday night Feb 14 the Catholic Daughters and the Knights worked together to show that fundraising and service can be a blast. Everyone worked hard to make our sweetheart dance a success and it was. Many thanks to our event director, Jack Crutchfield. Jack put the fun in fundraising. Thanks to Brother DJ Billy Eatmon, our master sound blaster. Thanks to the many Knights and Catholic Daughters involved in planning, preparation of the meal, room setup and cleanup. You all made a difference.
Lenten Fish Fry Dinners start this Friday Feb 20 at 5 pm. Support them by attending or if you would like to volunteer to help contact the Director Brother Vince Garra.

Next month we will conduct our Founders Day membership drive Mar 14 & 15 contact event director Ed Dondero if you can help. Mar 21 we host a Chapter meeting in Prendergast Hall. Contact event director Pat Esquibel to help. Also on Mar 21 our Council will make an Outreach to Tecate Mexico Nazareth Orphanage, contact Ed or Shawn Reidy to volunteer. Blood Drive and Knight’s breakfast on Mar 22. Many opportunities to make a difference my brothers, volunteer.

Great News, Congratulations to our Worthy Deputy Grand Knight, Pat Esquibel on his selection as California State Knight of the Month for October, 2015 More information to come regarding that special recognition.
I wish all of you and your Families a holy and blessed Lenten season.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ”what are you doing for others?” Martin Luther King Jr.

Vivat Jesus!
