On Saturday, my wife Dr. Marial Iglesias Utset and I were granted the honor of a private audience with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican to present him with a copy of his family tree. She and I had worked with an outstanding team of researchers to publish it in The New York Times Sunday Magazine and were deeply grateful for the chance to walk… His Holiness through the branches of his tree, regaling him with the stories of the ancestors who shaped them, back to his 12th great-grandparents who were born 500 years ago. Pope Leo XIV has appointed Most Rev. Michael Pham, auxiliary bishop of San Diego and diocesan administrator, as the Bishop of San Diego.
Bishop Pham has served our diocese since his ordination in 1999 and has held several leadership posts since then. He was named auxiliary bishop in 2023, and, most recently was elected diocesan administrator.
